Sustenance: SoHo's Kitchen

So it's Good Friday and I don't cook any meat besides fish starting from today until Easter Monday. I woke up this morning feeling groovy so I thought I'd make a traditional Jamaican breakfast for my family. Ackee and saltfish is one of my favourite dishes so here's how you do it:

Ingredients:
2 plum tomatoes
1 medium onion
1 clove of garlic
1 scotch bonnet pepper
Fresh thyme
Salted codfish
A pinch of salt and pepper
3 tablespoons of vegetable oil

Dice 2 plum tomatoes, a medium onion and chop the garlic and 1/5 of a scotch bonnet pepper very finely. You'll also need a few sprigs of fresh thyme.

Boil the codfish approximately 5 times to draw out the salt.  I use about a piece equivalent to the size of a slice of bread.

Once it's been boiled, separate the bones and skin and throw them out. Put aside the remaining fish.

Open the tin of ackee and rinse them in a strainer.

Sauté the vegetables in vegetable oil until they become soft also adding the salt and pepper, then add the ackee and saltfish. Cover and simmer stirring every so often for about 15 minutes.

Voila! We like to eat with buttered Jamaican hardo bread :)

Stolen Moments: Devotion

Location: Po Lin Monastery, Lantau Island, Hong Kong

I pulled this one from the archives. I completely forgot I took this while I was visiting a monastery in Hong Kong.

A traveller comes to pay her respects and worship by practicing burning incense as a form of devotion.

Check out my facebook link for more stills of my one day retreat:

Stolen Moments: Forgotten Things

Location:  Mill St. Downtown, Toronto

People probably pass by this spot on a regular basis thinking it's just a pile up of shit...if they even spare a moment of thought at all, but I don't know what it is that captivates me. It's a freeze frame moment in time...random forgotten things, free storage space, junk, nature, tags and bricked up windows? It's just the perfect balance of all things.

The Speed of Sound: James Blake "Limit To Your Love"

Alright so I think I'm obsessed with James Blake.  Truthfully, I rarely follow mainstream music and I can barely tell you what's poppin' off on MTV or Much Music's video roster BUT, I'm sitting here perusing through wikipedia because I'm a nerd like that, and then all of a sudden, my ears prick up and I'm instantly mesmerized by the sound of this amazing voice and bassline that's trapped in my gut! Lo and behold, I see this detailed and cinematically stunning music video featuring a typical ramen eating frat kid with a voice that systematically sends chills down my spine *breathe*. Enter James Blake! Hailing from the UK, his song that is stuck in my head and heart, "Limit To Your Love" which was originally covered by Canadian crooner Feist (LOVE her as well as her original version!), is currently the main culprit in killing the battery in my mp3 player.

Sustenance: Smoke's Poutinerie!

Strictly a Canadian known delicacy, (Hot damn! Greasy fries, fresh cheese curds and gravy...like how luxurious is that??), the poutine has been redefined chez Smoke's Poutinerie.  Located on Queen West in  downtown TO, this small piece of heaven makes the most fabulous poutines in existence. Dressed like a retro New York City punk rock haven with a little bit of modern twist, this joint makes over 20 different kinds of poutines ie: The Curry Chicken Poutine, Montreal Poutine (shaved Montreal smoked meat, a kosher dill pickle slice and a squeeze of mustard), my personal fav, The Prime Beef Poutine *drool* (Ground Prime Beef, sauteed mushrooms and caramelized onions) all complete with cheese and gravy.  They have veggie ones too as they appeal to the masses so basically, you have no excuse!

Conclusion: If you don't experience this place at least once, your culinary plate is considered lame. Period!

Location:  Queen St. West, Downtown Toronto

I need one of these tshirts pronto.

All their amazing reviews!

Mini-Soho loves it! That chalkboard adds a nice touch too. Easy Homer!

...and even The Fresh Prince made an appearance.

The Rundown

This one is from my travels in Hong Kong in February. I loved the entire ambiance of it! It was a quaint little cafe housing black and white stills of American rock and folk stars.  It was if I time travelled to Soho, New York in the '60s and I absolutely loved it!
